The Humanitarian Pin designed by renowned jewelry designer Ann Hand is based on the Tiffany stained glass windows on display at American Red Cross National Headquarters. The stained glass, one of three specially constructed for the Red Cross, illustrates that the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was conceived on a battlefield near Solferino, Italy in the middle of the 19th century. The window portrays an army of gallant knights in armor, carrying spears, and mounted on horses as they head into battle. Near the feet of the trotting horse lies a fallen warrior who is receiving food and aid from a faithful comrade. The window and pin expresses that even in the middle of battle, there is still a time and a place for humanitarian behavior. This pin is second in a series of three pins the National Capital Area has had commissioned for the Chapter. (Size: 2"W x 2½"H)
